February 5, 2016Nothing is quite as thrilling, or challenging, as the beginning of a new school year. Get ready, because the new year has arrived, well, almost.
Beginning a new school year can be a difficult time for children. Every child is hesitant to meet new people, more so, a new teacher and new classmates.
Here are some helpful ways to prepare your child for their first day of school:
1. Ask your child about her feelings, both excitements and worries, about starting school.
• This way your child can be comforted at a crucial time in their life. This is a great way to better involve yourself in their concerns and provides them with awareness of trust between the two of you.
2. Point out the positive aspects of starting school. It will be fun learning new material and making new friends.
• New comers may take starting school confidently, but others, may not. Easing your child into the new year will guarantee an excited student.
3. Let your child know that all kids are nervous about the first day of school.
• This will provide your child with understanding that they’re not alone on this one.
4. Visit the school with your child to see his new classroom and meet his new teacher before school officially starts.
• Most schools host an Open House before school begins. This is a great opportunity for your child to familiarize themselves with the halls. Also, this will be great for you to share any concerns with the teacher on teaching methods as well as major assignments and activities that the school year will bring.
5. Let your child know what their schedule will be like. Tell them what time school begins and ends each day.
• Introducing schedules and routines to children of all ages is beneficial. This allows them to learn time frames, but also expect what’s to come and ease some tension.
Schools will be in session by next week, but will your child be ready?
