January 22, 2015Why a Cartwheel?
A cartwheel is a foundation movement critical for gymnastics development. Practicing cartwheels develops kinesthetic awareness and flexibility, as well as strength and stability in hand support. The cartwheel is vital for the development of higher level skills such as the round off and handsprings.
Why is difficult to learn a cartwheel? Well, because children need to learn how to invert their bodies (handstand) and then turn it in an upside down position, straddling their legs.
There are many components in a cartwheel:
Handstand (upper body strength/core strength)
Straddle (flexibility)
Turn (spatial awareness)
FUN: It is the skill children enjoy the most! Once learned they can reproduce it everywhere in a safe way!
