July 24, 2016It is hard to raise an active child in today’s technological focused society. Children are spending more and more time in front of screens such as the television, phones, computers and video games. In addition, physical education classes in schools have been drastically reduced. With childhood obesity at record levels it is important for children and their parents to make physical activity a priority.
Both the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommend at least 6o minutes of physical activity every day. The CDC further suggests children participate in physical activities that are age appropriate , enjoyable, and offer variety. They break down the 60 minutes into three types of physical activity
Aerobic Exercise- jogging, running
Muscle Strengthening- push ups, sit ups
Bone Strengthening- jumping
Children who are inactive are more likely to gain weight because they don’t burn the calories that they take in from food and drinks. An inactive lifestyle also raises their risk for coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, colon cancer, and other health problems.
Studies show that children who are regularly active lead healthier lives, perform better at school and exhibit more self confidence. Create healthy habits now!
If you feel that your child is not getting enough physical activity learn more about our After Care program or our Gymnastics Classes to see how we can help.
